Plant Focus – Bounce Impatiens

In years past, Impatiens were considered the epitome of a summer flower for shady locations. They featured long bloom time, ease of growing, and a punch of color. However, in the past few years they have also featured Downy Mildew, a disease that affects impatiens by causing leaves to turn yellow and the plant to die. Without any effective treatments and a spreading problem, the recommendation was to stop planting impatiens altogether.

In response, nurseries began breeding new plant material. They focused on new and improved varieties of Begonia, Sunpatiens, and Coleus, among other shade tolerant plants. Though this gave us options, what was missing most was the fantastic color selection that the impatiens had given us. That problem has been solved by the introduction of the Bounce Impatiens.

Bounce Impatiens are available in colors including: violet, lavender, lilac, cherry, and white. Their color options, however, are just one of the benefits of having this plant on the market. Bounce impatiens boast their large, bright, self-cleaning flowers on sturdy branches reaching a height of 20-30” at maturity. These easy to grow plants will “Bounce” back quickly after a dry spell or few missed waterings. Through the hottest days of summer, Bounce Impatiens will deliver the dramatic floral impact we love to see in a shade garden.

Congratulations to Mark Donahue, U of I Extension Certified Master Gardener!

Mark Donahue, Landscape Estimator and Plantsman in our Plainfield office, recently became certified as a University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener. Mark has been interested in plants and gardening for a long time. “Growing up, I spent inordinate amounts of time digging in the dirt, and doing yard work that none of my brothers wanted to do,” Mark says. Donahue earned an Associates Degree in Horticulture from Joliet Junior College and this was just the starting point for his love of plants and nature. Over the past fifteen years, Mark has transformed his family’s yard from ‘generic postage stamp’ to ‘English Cottage Garden.’ “I learn new things in the garden; most important is a keen love of nature, and a respect for all living things,” Mark states.

Mark took eleven classes and volunteered over sixty hours over the past 1.5 years to earn this great distinction. “The program has been incredibly rewarding, as I’ve enjoyed sharing my love of gardening, and the many benefits it offers with offers.”

Congratulations to Mark Donahue!

Clarence Davids wins a GOLD award!

Clarence Davids & Company is proud to announce that our garden at the 2014 Chicago Flower & Garden Show received the 2015 Illinois Landscape Contractors Association Excellence in Landscape Gold Award. Our garden appropriately named “Your Style, Your Garden,” was designed to follow the mission of the show to educate, motivate, and inspire gardeners of all ages by showing endless options for outdoor spaces. House facades were constructed to represent different styles of architecture and provided the framework for the garden design. The styles ranged from a traditional approach, to a more relaxed style, to a backyard that extended from the perceived interior space outdoors. A parkway was included as part of an urban component to the garden. The backyard space was divided into four different gathering spaces; the outdoor kitchen, dining area, fire pit, and pond.

This lush garden arose from the blank, empty floor of Navy Pier to inspire show visitors to evaluate their garden space and make ‘green’ choices regardless of their design style preference.
